Case Study: BRONZE

Capitol Grounds of the State of Iowa

The State of Iowa sought a durable patina that enhanced the appearance of the bronze sculptures. Together we devised a program of:
• Cleaning to bare metal
• Removing all the aged corrosion and failed coating materials
• Application of chemical patina
• Selection of a durable coating system for continued protection

Here we are hard at work removing the thick layers of green and black bronze corrosion. Bare bronze appears as the corrosion layers are removed.

Beneath the green and black products of bronze corrosion lies the pink color of the original cast metal. Here is the Union Cavalry Man after cleaning with very fine glass beads. All the sculptures on the first three levels of the a monument were cleaned to this degree.

Union General Marcellus M. Crocker is illustrated here with a fully corroded bronze surface prior to conservation treatment in 2004.

After conservation treatment, General Crocker has a historically correct brown chemical patina, applied with torches to bare metal, and a protective coating to slow the return of bronze decay.
